‘We know what to do’ – Akonnor tells Gor Mahia fans not to panic despite Super Cup setback

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has cautioned against hitting the panic button after Gor Mahia’s loss to Tusker FC in the 2026 FKF Super Cup on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Gor failed to land a first trophy, losing out 3-1 to Julien Mette’s side in a clash that raised questions ahead of the team’s title defense starting in a week’s time.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor described the loss as a setback but insisted there was no need for alarm or panic, as his side only fell short in managing crucial moments and made what he described as “funny mistakes.”
“We made funny mistakes; that is the point. The issue is not about how we played, but awareness in crucial moments. It is a problem affecting our players, and the mistakes in how we are defending are becoming too much with repeated errors,” he stated.

“Overall, we know what to do; we are on the right track. This team is ready, and we will come back. We will come back. The team is ready,” he stated.
The Ghanaian also refuted assertions that the defeat was down to him fielding fringe players for the crucial finale.
“We are not testing; we have gone past that. We just did not do well in certain areas of the game. The goals we conceded were about individual mistakes, and that is what we seek to rectify,” he insisted.
Omar chides Gor
His remarks come after Tusker FC and Harambee Stars defender Abud Omar opined that K’Ogalo paid the ultimate price for underestimating the potential of their 2026 Football Kenya Federation Super Cup rivals during the encounter at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The Harambee Stars defender, who followed proceedings from the stands as his new club delivered an attacking masterclass to edge the reigning Kenyan Premier League champions, also said the result will help boost the team’s spirit and morale in their CAF assignments.
“Gor Mahia underestimated Tusker players. When you underestimate young players, you are going to get punished, and that is what befell Gor Mahia,” Omar said.
“It is a lesson to them and also to us as we look into the campaign at the CAF games.”
