Coach Akonnor adamant Gor Mahia are not yet champions; vows to fight to the end

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor remains adamant that the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title race is far from decided, asserting that the team will not rest on its laurels despite moving closer to the league crown after beating AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby.

Speaking ahead of Gor Mahia’s clash away to Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Ghanaian tactician said the team will fight until the final fixture and see where it leads them.

Not over yet

“I said in my last press conference before the AFC match that the run is not over, even with a win against AFC Leopards. We believe that it continues until the last match, when we are certain we have secured the title,” he posited on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

According to the gaffer, while the belief is there, the club needs to ensure its on-pitch performance is tactically sound to maintain the momentum.

“It is not going to be easy, and we want to psyche the team on a match-to-match basis until we get there. For now, we should not get ahead of ourselves,” he cautioned.

Approach for Homeboyz

Akonnor admitted it will be a completely different game against a new opponent, but noted that the target of winning remains the same.

“We believe that come Sunday, we will be ready for the clash. We will try to change a few things from the AFC Leopards match; we hope to be sound defensively and look to attack the game. It will surely be a different plan,” he stated.

His remarks come as K’Ogalo nears a record-extending 22nd league title following the derby win. With five fixtures remaining, Gor Mahia is mathematically close to sealing the championship, needing only two wins and a draw to wrap up the title.

The club got a timely injury boost with the return of centre-back Sylvester Owino, who has been out with an injury layoff.

In an update on Friday, May 1, 2026, Gor confirmed that the Harambee Stars ace is fit for selection for the clash.

Despite making the bench for the Mashemeji Derby, Owino did not feature; however, he has since recovered fully and is hopeful to make the squad for the trip to Mumias.

The log leaders will be keen to extend the winning momentum as they look to hit the magic 71-point mark
