Alejandro Balde: How the situation at Barcelona could boost Man United’s pursuit of Spanish defender

Manchester United’s push for a new left-back appears to have shifted to Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. Premier League clubs are all pushing for further signings before the deadline in what is expected to be a frantic end to the transfer window before it officially closes on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
United’s search for a marauding full-back has been boosted by reports indicating the defender may be willing to leave his boyhood club, Barcelona. The Catalan club is understood to be open to cashing in on the player in the event of a good proposal, but has not expressly asked him to leave.
Left out of La Liga opener
Balde, alongside Marc Casadó and Héctor Fort, was not part of the squad in their opening La Liga 5-0 win over Elche on Sunday, August 23, 2026, fueling speculation of a possible departure before the transfer window closes. Coach Hansi Flick confirmed the reason for his absence while clarifying his stance on the situation.
“I have NOT told Alejandro Balde to leave. I spoke with him this morning; I told him to think about it and that we’ll talk again tomorrow,” he said, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
According to an update by Romano, United’s focus has now shifted to a new left-back after reaching an agreement for Carlos Baleba. The Cameroonian is expected to be unveiled at Manchester United soon.
Potential impediments
United will, however, face a huge asking price from Barcelona, who regard the player highly and remain keen on keeping him.
According to stats, before his injury in the 2024–25 season, Balde ranked first among La Liga full-backs in most key metrics, dominating in dribbles, fouls suffered, offensive actions, and most passes into the penalty area. He was second in progressive runs and fourth in offensive duels won.
Beyond an agreement between the clubs over the player’s valuation, an impediment could present itself in the details and conditions of the deal, such as the wages requested by Balde.
Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, 21, who came through the Chelsea academy, and Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas were also on the club shortlist for the left-back role to reinforce options for Luke Shaw, who is entering the twilight years of his career.
