Job Ochieng’s journey at Real Sociedad has been a story of patience, setbacks and gradual progression, but on Monday night, September 7, 2026, the Kenyan forward produced the kind of performance that suggested he is ready to become a significant figure for the Spanish club.

Ochieng scored once and provided two assists as Real Sociedad defeated Elche 3-2 away in La Liga, earning the Man of the Match award after being directly involved in all three of his team’s goals.

For a player who spent years waiting for his opportunity, the performance represented another major step in an extraordinary rise from the lower levels of Spanish football to the La Liga spotlight.

From Maspalomas to San Sebastián

Born in Nairobi on January 17, 2003, Ochieng began his senior career with Maspalomas, where he made eight league appearances and scored once between 2020 and 2022.

His opportunity to move closer to the Spanish elite came in 2022 when he went on trial at Real Sociedad. The club subsequently signed him for its C team, but his introduction to life at Sociedad was far from straightforward.

Injuries delayed his debut until February 2023, when he finally started in a 1-0 Segunda Federación victory over Alavés B.

That difficult beginning could easily have stalled his progress. Instead, Ochieng gradually worked his way through the club’s development structure.

Learning the trade with Real Sociedad B

For the 2023-24 season, Ochieng was promoted to Real Sociedad B. Initially, however, he was largely a reserve option.

Rather than being handed a quick route into the senior side, the Kenyan had to earn his place over several seasons.

That patience eventually paid off.

By the time Real Sociedad B secured promotion to Segunda División in 2025, Ochieng had accumulated 65 appearances and 10 goals for the reserve side. His professional breakthrough came on August 17, 2025, when he started against Zaragoza and scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

It was an important moment because it showed that Ochieng could make an impact at professional level when given responsibility.

From the reserves to La Liga

His development eventually brought him to the first-team door.

Ochieng made his Real Sociedad senior debut, and his La Liga debut, on February 7, 2026, when he came off the bench for Gonçalo Guedes during a 3-1 home victory over Elche.

That appearance placed him among a select group of Kenyan footballers to play in Spain’s top division, following in the footsteps of McDonald Mariga and Michael Olunga.

Just 13 days later, Real Sociedad rewarded his progress by extending his contract until 2028.

The club’s faith in him became even clearer in August 2026, when Ochieng was definitively promoted to the first team and handed the number 12 shirt.

The night he announced himself

His elevation to the senior squad has now been followed by arguably the biggest performance of his young career.

Against Elche, Ochieng needed only 11 minutes to open his La Liga scoring account, unleashing a powerful right-footed strike into the roof of the net. He then created Real Sociedad’s second goal after capitalising on an error in the Elche defence and setting up Yangel Herrera.

With Sociedad reduced to 10 men and Elche fighting back from 2-0 down, Ochieng continued to influence the contest.

In the 90th minute, he supplied Luka Sučić, who fired home the winner to complete a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The result ended Sociedad’s run of eight consecutive La Liga away matches without a victory, while Ochieng walked away with the Man of the Match award.

A new chapter for the Kenyan

The performance was significant not merely because of the numbers attached to it, but because of what it says about Ochieng’s development.

He has gone from an injury-hit newcomer at Real Sociedad’s C team to a player trusted to start a La Liga match and influence the outcome at both ends of the pitch.

His manager, Pellegrino Matarazzo, has also highlighted the physical qualities that have helped Ochieng make that transition, praising his endurance, ability to repeat high-intensity runs and understanding of what the team requires from him.

At 23, Ochieng is still at the beginning of his first-team career. But the path he has taken makes his latest achievement particularly notable: he did not arrive at Real Sociedad as an established star. He climbed through the club’s system, endured injuries, spent seasons competing for opportunities with the reserves and slowly earned the trust needed to reach the biggest stage.

Now, after scoring and creating two more goals against Elche, Ochieng has given Real Sociedad another reason to believe that the Kenyan forward who patiently worked his way through the ranks can become an important part of its future.
