Arsenal aim to build on strong Premier League history against Newcastle in title race

Arsenal will welcome Newcastle United this Saturday, April 25, 2026, with the objective of strengthening an impressive Premier League record that has developed over many years of encounters with the Magpies.
The meeting comes at a moment when the Gunners are desperately seeking to reclaim their top spot, following Manchester City’s win at Burnley on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Memorable encounters
Across decades of meetings, there have been several unforgettable clashes between the two teams. Supporters still recall the thrilling 7–3 contest in 2012 as well as the composed 2–0 victory in 2002 that was highlighted by the quality of Dennis Bergkamp.
However, Arsenal’s defensive strength has played the biggest role in achieving a remarkable milestone in the league.
Out of 61 Premier League meetings between the sides, Arsenal have prevented Newcastle from scoring in 31 of those matches. That tally represents the highest number of clean sheets any club has recorded against a single opponent since the competition began in 1992.

The record also features a long stretch of defensive dominance at home. Between 2014 and 2024, Arsenal kept seven successive clean sheets against Newcastle at their home ground.
That run finally ended when former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock found the net, bringing to a close a lengthy spell in which Newcastle had failed to score in North London. More recently, goalkeeper David Raya kept Newcastle out during a narrow 1–0 win secured by a strike from Declan Rice, marking Arsenal’s 31st shutout against the Magpies.
Newcastle remain the team Arsenal have recorded the most clean sheets against in the Premier League, with West Ham, Everton, Manchester United, and Aston Villa trailing behind in that category.
Of those 31 clean sheets, 13 came at St James’ Park, while the remaining 18 were achieved in North London, seven at Highbury and 11 at the Emirates Stadium. Newcastle’s record at the Emirates has been particularly poor, with just one league victory from 17 visits and only eight goals scored there.
Since their first trip to the stadium in 2006, Newcastle have averaged very few points per game, ranking among the least successful visiting teams.
Seeking to extend record
While defensive strength has been a key factor in Arsenal’s success against Newcastle, attacking output has also been consistent.
Arsenal have scored 99 goals in their 61 Premier League meetings with the Magpies, leaving them just one goal short of reaching 100 against Newcastle. If that milestone is reached, Newcastle would become the fifth club Arsenal have scored at least a century of league goals against.

Several forwards have enjoyed success in this fixture over the years. Olivier Giroud stands out with eight goals against Newcastle, including three matches in which he scored twice. Legendary striker Thierry Henry and former captain Robin van Persie each contributed six goals against the same opponents.
In the current squad, seven Arsenal players have already added to the total against Newcastle. Notably, Arsenal’s last 10 Premier League goals against the Magpies have been scored by 10 different players, highlighting the team’s wide range of attacking contributors.
