Kenyans have been told to brace for a burst of rainfall this weekend, after weeks of anxious chatter over a dry spell that has left farms parched and residents worried about a looming drought.

In a fresh weather update delivered on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Kenya Meteorological Department stepped in to reassure a concerned public, going as far as responding directly to citizens on social media.

The department confirmed that widespread showers are expected between Friday, December 12, and Sunday, December 14, with rainfall gradually increasing across several regions as the weekend progresses.

The announcement came amid growing unease online, fuelled by fears that the recent dry conditions could worsen heading into 2026.

One X user, Makau Mully, captured the national mood when he tweeted: “We need to pray for 2026. Farms don’t look good.”

In a rare show of empathy – and in a tone that immediately caught the public’s attention – the weatherman replied: “We hear you 🙏. Thanks for sharing your concern.”

The department went on to offer a more hopeful outlook:

“Good news — rains are likely over several parts of the country into the weekend, as illustrated in the map. Rainfall is expected across the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Northeastern, the Coastal region and the South-Eastern lowlands, with amounts gradually increasing.”

Alongside the expected showers, the Met Department also warned of strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) over Turkana and Marsabit counties, advising residents to remain cautious, especially those living in exposed areas.

The update has brought a wave of relief, particularly for residents in farming communities, many of whom have endured increasingly dry conditions in recent weeks.

Farmers in the highlands and Rift Valley zones heavily dependent on consistent rainfall, welcomed the projection, noting that improved soil moisture could help kickstart upcoming planting activities.

Across social media, Kenyans reacted with a mix of hope and cautious optimism. Some celebrated the return of the rains, while others urged the government to prepare long-term solutions amid warnings of shifting climate patterns.

But for now, the forecast signals a temporary reprieve and the Met Department’s unusual direct engagement with anxious citizens has earned applause from a public desperate for clarity.

As the weekend approaches, all eyes remain on the skies, and Kenyans are watching closely to see if the promised showers will finally break the dry spell.
