Kenya Met forecasts rain across several regions on Saturday, May 23

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a forecast indicating varied weather conditions across the country on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with rainfall expected in several regions alongside strong winds in selected areas.

According to the advisory issued on Friday, May 22, 2026, rainfall is expected over parts of the Coast, the Highlands west and east of the Rift Valley.

The Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the Rift Valley are also likely to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms at different times of the day.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, including counties such as Kisumu, Kisii, Kakamega, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Migori and Siaya, the morning is expected to begin with sunny intervals and occasional rain in a few places.

Thunderstorms may develop in the afternoon, particularly in the lake basin areas.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places tonight. Mainly sunny intervals with rain over a few places expected in the morning across the lake basin and the Mt. Elgon region. Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places in the afternoon, “Kenya Met stated.

In Nairobi, the day is expected to begin with cloudy conditions in the morning before breaking into sunny intervals later in the day.

The Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Meru and Embu, will experience cloudy conditions early in the day, breaking into sunny intervals. Light showers are expected in some areas during the afternoon hours.

Strong winds flagged in several counties

Kenya Met has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots in parts of the North Western, North Eastern, Coastal and South Eastern Lowlands regions.

Counties expected to be most affected include Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Kitui and Makueni.

Coastal and northern outlook

Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and Tana River, partly cloudy conditions are expected, with light showers in places such as Malindi in the morning.

Sunny intervals are likely to dominate later in the day, though strong winds will persist across all coastal counties.

“Strong southerly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected across all the counties,” Kenya Met predicted.

In the North Eastern region, including Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo, the forecast shows partly cloudy conditions turning into sunny intervals throughout the day, but with continued strong winds.

The South Eastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta, will also see a mix of cloudy conditions and scattered showers before clearing into sunny intervals.
