Kenya Met: Rainfall expected to persist in highlands, Rift Valley and Coast

Rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of the country as the Kenya Meteorological Department issues a fresh weather forecast covering the period between May 26 and June 1, 2026.

The update on X on Monday, May 25, 2026, shows that wet conditions will remain in major regions, including the highlands, Rift Valley and Coastal areas.

According to the forecast, rains will continue in the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast, and parts of Northeastern Kenya. The department also notes that some areas may experience heavy rainfall events during this period.

Weather advisory across multiple regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department explained that the ongoing rains are part of a wider weather pattern affecting the country. The advisory shows that both highland and lowland areas will continue receiving rainfall in the coming days.

The department also highlighted that some specific areas, including parts of the Coast and Garissa, could experience heavier rainfall compared to other regions. This raises the possibility of localised flooding and disruptions in daily activities.

“Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast and some parts of the Northeastern Kenya,” Kenya Met said.

The weather office further encouraged the public to stay alert and follow updates, as conditions may change quickly depending on rainfall intensity. The forecast also directs people to check daily updates through official platforms for more detailed guidance.

The department added that heavy rainfall events may occur in some parts of the Coast and Garissa, which could affect transport and other outdoor activities.

“Heavy rainfall events may occur in some parts of the Coast & Garissa,” Kenya Met added.

Temperature

According to the weatherman, daytime (maximum) average temperatures of more than 30°C are expected in the Coast, some parts of the Southeastern Lowlands, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.

Moreover, nighttime (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in a few areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and in the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

“Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of North Western, North Eastern, Coast and South Eastern Lowlands counties,” Kenya Met predicted.

Earlier, the Kenya Meteorological Department had also released a separate weather outlook covering the period from Tuesday, May 19, 2026 to Monday, May 25, 2026. That forecast also indicated that rainfall would continue in several regions across the country.

Currently, some parts of the country are already experiencing heavy rainfall, with reports of flooding in estates and roads in different regions. The situation has affected movement in some areas as water levels continue to rise.

Residents in affected areas have been dealing with waterlogged roads and disrupted transport as the rains continue. Some estates have also reported temporary flooding, making movement and daily activities difficult.

The public has long been advised to remain cautious, especially in areas that are prone to flooding during heavy downpours.
