Uhuru Kenyatta leads push for Eastern DRC peace as key talks begin
A key meeting to support retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s efforts to advance peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has commenced in Nairobi.
The Process Design Meeting began on Monday, June 22, 2026, and will run until June 24, 2026, at a hotel in Nairobi.
“The Process Design Meeting in support of H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta’s Armed Groups Working Stream for the Eastern DRC Peace Process has commenced today, 22 June 2026, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Upper Hill, Nairobi,” the Office of the 4th President of Kenya official X account wrote on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The meeting has brought together representatives from several regional and international organisations. Among those taking part are officials from the African Union (AU), East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), the Office of the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region (OSE GL), and other experts.
“This closed door technical session brings together representatives from the African Union (AU), East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), the Office of the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region (OSE GL), and leading experts,” the Office of the 4th President of Kenya explained.
Focus on future engagement
Over the next three days, participants are expected to discuss several issues related to the peace process in eastern DRC. Their work will focus on refining the scope, safeguards, and sequencing criteria for future engagement with armed groups operating in affected regions.

“Over the next three days, participants will refine scope, safeguards, and sequencing criteria for future engagement with armed groups in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu,” the Office of the 4th President of Kenya stated.
The discussions are part of ongoing efforts aimed at supporting peace and stability in eastern DRC. The region has continued to face challenges linked to the activities of armed groups in several areas.
The Nairobi meeting is expected to provide technical input that will help shape future steps under the Eastern DRC Peace Process. Participants will continue their deliberations until June 24, 2026 before concluding with the planned strategic session involving the former president.
