Uhuru attends high-level talks in Addis Ababa on DRC peace
Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Ethiopia for renewed regional efforts to restore peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Through a post on X on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, the Office of the 4th President of Kenya confirmed that Uhuru attended a high-level Consultative Meeting of the AUC–EAC–SADC Panel of Facilitators on the Eastern DRC Peace Process held in Addis Ababa.
The meeting comes at a time when the eastern DRC continues to experience insecurity linked to armed groups, displacement of civilians, and strained regional relations despite the signing of the peace accord in the US.
“His Excellency President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta attended a Consultative Meeting of the AUC-EAC-SADC Panel of Facilitators on the Eastern DRC Peace Process in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, earlier today,” the Office of the 4th President of Kenya wrote on X.
African leaders and mediators have intensified diplomatic engagements to align peace initiatives and push for a sustainable political solution.

Regional heavyweights present
According to the statement, the consultative forum brought together prominent former Heads of State who are serving as facilitators in the peace process.
Those present included former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, former Central African Republic President Catherine Samba-Panza, and former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde.
The panel, operating under the African Union, East African Community, and Southern African Development Community frameworks, is tasked with harmonising regional mediation tracks to avoid duplication and strengthen the credibility of peace efforts in the conflict-hit region.
Focus on Eastern DRC
The Office of the 4th President of Kenya stated that the facilitators reviewed the current status of the Eastern DRC peace roadmap, assessed the challenges facing ongoing dialogue, and explored ways to enhance cooperation between political mediation and security interventions on the ground.
Uhuru Kenyatta, who has previously been appointed as a regional peace envoy, continues to play a visible role in continental diplomacy, particularly on matters of peace and security.
His participation in the Addis Ababa meeting reinforces Kenya’s long-standing involvement in regional stability initiatives and multilateral conflict resolution.

The facilitators are expected to engage further with regional leaders, international partners, and stakeholders in the coming days as efforts continue to end violence and restore lasting peace in the eastern DRC.
