De Zerbi delivers verdict on Spurs players after costly misses in Liverpool defeat

Tottenham Hotspur coach Roberto De Zerbi has insisted that he still believes in his players to turn the club’s fortunes around amid a dismal start to the 2026/27 season.
Spurs’ winless run was compounded further as the Londoners fell 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
Spurs created a few scoring chances early on but were kept at bay by Giorgi Mamardashvili and the Liverpool backline. Lucas Bergvall and Mohammed Kudus sprung early glorious chances in the tie.
Kudus just failed to deflect home a Mathys Tel cross from the left wing, while Omar Marmoush was among those who missed chances the visitors should have put to bed.
Finish better
Speaking after the game, the Italian read positives from his side’s performance, noting that their downfall came down to another tepid display in front of goal.
“We have to shoot more, we have to shoot better, and we have to finish better the clear situations,” the Spurs head coach said.

“But we are sorry for the result, disappointed, frustrated. I think it is unfair, but we have to be stronger in these unlucky moments,” he added.
As the club’s struggles hit a new low with elimination from the cup competition, De Zerbi felt that they have largely been unlucky in most instances of games. The team had approached the tie fresh off a 5-goal win over Charlton Athletic—the team’s only victory in their six games across all competitions.
“In these five or six games, we have not been lucky. We have to improve a lot of things, but we are on the right way. I have big confidence and a big opinion of my players.”
Spurs opened their league campaign, losing to fellow Londoners Brentford 3-0. They bounced back to thrash Charlton in the Carabao Cup second round but were soon back on a losing run, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on their home turf.
The team showed signs of revival after back-to-back draws against Nottingham Forest and a home draw against Everton on Saturday, September 12, 2026, though they remain just above the drop zone.
