Traffic alert: List of roads to be closed for Nairobi City Marathon

Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to plan their journeys in advance as several major roads will be closed this weekend to facilitate the fifth edition of the Nairobi City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2026.

According to the marathon organisers, the closures will begin on Saturday night and continue into Sunday afternoon, affecting key routes across the city, including the Nairobi Expressway, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, Moi Avenue and City Hall Way.

The Nairobi Expressway will be closed in both directions between James Gichuru and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from 10pm on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

Motorists using Waiyaki Way will also be affected, with the inner lanes set to be closed from the Nairobi School entrance to the Expressway entrance. Two inner lanes on both sides will remain inaccessible between midnight and 10am on Sunday.

Uhuru Highway will be closed on both sides between Lusaka Roundabout and Museum Hill from midnight until 2pm on Sunday.

Other roads set to be affected include Moi Avenue, which will be closed between University Way and City Hall Way from midnight to 2pm, and Kenyatta Avenue, which will be inaccessible between PanAfric Hotel and Moi Avenue from midnight until 4pm.

University Way will also be closed between Uhuru Highway and the slip road from midnight to 2pm, while Haile Selassie Avenue and Processional Way will remain closed between the Cathedral and Uhuru Highway from midnight until 4pm.

In addition, City Hall Way, Simba Street, Muindi Mbingu Street and Koinange Street will be closed during various periods on Sunday as runners make their way through the marathon route.

The marathon, now in its fifth edition, is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators.

  • Simba Street – Midnight to 2pm Sunday
  • Muindi Mbingu Street – Midnight to 2pm Sunday

Motorists are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the road closure schedule and seek alternative routes to avoid disruptions during the marathon.
