Rules for ETC and MTC toll lanes on Nairobi Expressway explained

Moja Expressway Company has issued guidelines for motorists using the Nairobi Expressway to help reduce confusion and long queues at toll stations.
In a public notice shared on August 5, 2026, the operator urged drivers to prepare before setting off, reminding everyone to check lane requirements ahead of reaching entry and exit points along the highway.
The update comes as more motorists turn to the toll road to beat Nairobi traffic, making lane discipline essential for smooth movement. The company noted that picking the wrong lane leads to unnecessary hold-ups for everyone at the barriers.
How Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes work
Motorists using the Electronic Toll Collection system should look out for dedicated lanes marked with green overhead ETC signage. Designed for non-stop transit, this option allows vehicles to pass through without coming to a complete stop, automatically deducting the toll fee as the barrier lifts.
To use this service, drivers need an On-Board Unit mounted on their vehicle windscreen. Accounts can be topped up easily using mobile money, USSD shortcodes such as *819#, or the official online platform.
Moja Expressway emphasised that these lanes are reserved strictly for registered subscribers, warning that unregistered cars entering ETC gates cause avoidable delays during peak morning and evening rush hours.
This operational model aligns with global transport data. A peer-reviewed study published in IET Intelligent Transport Systems observed that “ETCS is preferred in countries because it is more convenient and efficient than manual toll collection,” making it the ideal choice for heavy commuter routes.
What to expect on MTC lanes
Drivers without an automated device must use the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) lanes, marked by green MTC overhead signs. Unlike the automated passage, manual lanes require motorists to stop fully at the barrier so toll attendants or automated machines can process their payment.
The operator noted that the manual option keeps the express highway accessible to all road users, catering to both regular commuters and occasional visitors. Drivers can settle their toll fees using cash, mobile money services, or pre-loaded MTC tap cards.
Those paying via mobile money collect an entry ticket at the gate and present it at their destination plaza to clear the balance before continuing their journey.
