ODPP: Recording someone, especially in intimate spaces is violation of their rights

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has denounced the non‑consensual recording of individuals, especially in private and intimate spaces, as a serious violation of privacy and human rights.

In a statement shared on Friday, December 5, 2025, the office stated that such recordings, whether of a person’s voice, image, or sexual activity, are unlawful and punishable under the law.

ODPP highlighted that recordings made without consent can be used to shame, manipulate, or exploit victims, causing long-lasting emotional and psychological harm. The office urged the public to respect privacy and warned that anyone found distributing such material would face legal consequences.

“Recording someone without consent, especially in intimate spaces, is a violation of their rights. ODPP enforces laws against non-consensual recording and distribution. The non-consensual recording of someone’s voice, image, or sexual activity is a serious violation of privacy and autonomy. Such recordings are often used to exploit, manipulate, or shame victims, causing significant emotional and psychological harm,” ODPP stated.

The announcement comes as the world observes the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which runs annually from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The campaign, launched in 1991, aims to raise awareness about all forms of violence against women and girls and calls for collective action to end such abuse.

This year, the campaign has highlighted modern forms of abuse, including digital and online violence. Non-consensual recordings and online harassment have become a growing concern, with victims often suffering in silence.
