Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced the suspension of all cooperation between the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the United States of America embassy in Kampala.

Muhoozi, who is also the oldest child of Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, announced the move on Friday, January 30, 2026.

In a statement on his official X account, Muhoozi alleged that US embassy officials in Kampala colluded with National Unity Platform politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine to stage the latter’s kidnapping.

He attributed this to intelligence reports and asserted that it is on this basis that all cooperation has been suspended, including the Uganda army’s work in Somalia.

“Fellow Ugandans, because of the present situation where an opposition leader kidnapped himself and is missing, and according to our best intelligence, did all this in coordination with the current administration at the US Embassy in our country. We as UPDF suspend ALL cooperation with the current administration at the US Embassy in Kampala. This includes our work in Somalia,” Muhoozi declared.

According to Muhoozi, the bureaucrats at the embassy have undermined the precarious security cooperation between the two countries for more than a decade, despite the excellent political relations between Kampala and Washington DC.

“The very precious security co-operation between Uganda and the United States has been undermined for a decade now (since 2015) by unimaginative bureaucrats at the Embassy. This is in spite of the excellent political relations between the two countries,” he added.

The January 15, 2026 elections was characterised by claims of violence, threats, intimidation and electoral theft as President Yoweri Museveni cruised to victory with more than 71 per cent of the votes.

His main challenger, Bobi wine came a distant second with 2.7 million votes and disputed the results.

Muhoozi threatens to sanction US

This comes barely a day after Muhoozi, who has been on a tweeting spree, threatened to sanction the US.

Through a post on his X account on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Muhoozi informed those in the US who would sanction him or Uganda that his country would retaliate by imposing similar sanctions on the United States.

“If some spoilers in the USA sanction me or Uganda for anything, we shall respond by sanctioning them too,” Muhoozi stated.

The statement was in response to heavy criticism by United States Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who released a terse statement on Uganda’s recent elections describing it as a “Hollow exercise”.
