Muhoozi threatens to sanction US

President Yoweri Museveni’s Son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba has threatened to sanction the United States of America.

Through a post on his X account on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Muhoozi informed those in the US who would sanction him or Uganda that his country would retaliate by imposing similar sanctions on the United States.

“If some spoilers in the USA sanction me or Uganda for anything, we shall respond by sanctioning them too,” Muhoozi stated.

This came as a response to United States Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who released a statement on Uganda’s recent elections describing it as a “Hollow exercise”.

In the statement, the Senator suggested that the US should reasses their relationship with countries like Uganda and review whether sanctions are warranted against the likes of General Muhoozi.

Uganda’s elections – like the recent elections in Tanzania – were a hollow exercise, staged to legitimise President Yoweri Museveni’s seventh term and four decades in power.”

“But even more so than Tanzania, Uganda is a key regional security partner to the United States. Yet, its ruling regime prioritises domestic control through political violence, abductions, imprisonment, intimidation of opponents, and the misuse of state resources to maintain its grip on power. Uganda is also linked to destabilising regional activities, including in South Sudan, making the regime an increasingly problematic exporter of instability. Tanzania and Uganda are moving along similar paths, raising serious concerns about what this portends for other countries with upcoming elections, including Ethiopia and Kenya.”

“I applaud how the Trump Administration is pursuing commercial and security gains in the region, but I’m concerned this will be increasingly difficult to do given the current trajectory. As with Tanzania, the administration should reassess the U.S. security relationship with Uganda, beginning with a review of whether sanctions are warranted under existing authorities against specific actors, including General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.” read part of the statement.

Following the recently concluded Ugandan general elections, Muhoozi has frequently made news for his provocative social media activity.

In one instance, he posted a series of updates on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that their forces had eliminated 22 opposition party supporters and warning of similar actions in the future.
