Missing activist Davis Lichuma has been found alive after days of uncertainty over his whereabouts following his disappearance during the June 25, 2026, Gen Z anniversary protests.

In a post shared on Monday, June 29, 2026, the Social Justice Centres Working Group (SJCWG) announced that Lichuma had been found alive after what it described as a brutal ordeal.

According to the organisation, Lichuma is claimed to have been tortured, abandoned, and left for dead before being dumped at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). He was later transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Brutal ordeal described

The rights group said Lichuma’s condition raised serious concerns over what he is said to have endured while missing.

“Davis Lichuma has been found alive after being brutally tortured, abandoned, and left for dead. He was dumped at Kenyatta National Hospital and has since been transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for urgent medical care,” the statement read.

Separately, human rights organisation VOCAL Africa also confirmed that Lichuma had been found.

In a statement, the organisation said the activist was receiving treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital but remained in a critical state.

“Comrade Lichuma has been found. He is currently at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital receiving care, though he is in a really bad condition and he looks visibly shaken,” VOCAL Africa said.

SJCWG added that after days of unanswered questions surrounding his whereabouts, Lichuma had resurfaced bearing what it described as physical evidence of the violence inflicted on him.

Demand for answers

Despite Lichuma being found alive, SJCWG insisted that the case was far from over and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

The group demanded a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, saying the public deserves answers.

“Those responsible for his abduction, torture and illegal detention must be identified and held accountable. The Kenyan public deserves answers: Who took Davis? Where was he held? Who ordered his torture? Why was he abandoned and left for dead?” the organisation stated.

It further said it would not accept silence, cover-ups or excuses regarding the incident.

Justice sought

SJCWG thanked human rights defenders, members of the public and all those who amplified calls for Lichuma’s safe return during the days he was missing.

The organisation maintained that its pursuit of justice would continue until those responsible are brought to account.

“The struggle for justice continues until every perpetrator is brought to account and until enforced disappearances and torture become a thing of the past,” the statement added.
