Kenyatta Hospital death case: Kalombotole denies killing patient

Kennedy Kalombotole has denied killing a fellow patient, one Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The 40-year-old patient was tragically murdered inside Ward 7B/7C of KNH during the night of February 6 and 7, 2025.
Appearing virtually before Kibera High Court Judge Diana Kavedza on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Kalombotole has denied committing the offence on the night of February, 6, 2025 and February 7, 2025.
“A plea of not guilty has been entered for the accused person,” Judge Kavedza noted.
The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has informed the court that they will be opposing the release of the accused on bail and bond pending the hearing and determination of the murder case.
“My lady, we intend to file an affidavit opposing his release on bail and bond within one day,” the prosecution told the court.
Notably, Judge Kavedza has directed that the accused be remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending the hearing of his bail application.
She has directed the prison to ensure that the accused’s well-being is well prioritised, put on a diabetic diet, and that he takes his medication religiously.
Kalombotole’s plea-taking came after a team of doctors from Mbagathi Hospital’s final report ruled that he is fit to plead to the murder charge.
Earlier, a second mental assessment test had declared him unfit to face trial.
Doctor Frederick Owiti had revealed that Kalombotole was not aware that he was being linked with the deaths at KNH, thus declaring him unfit to plead to murder charges.
“Judging by his cognitive bluntness. In view of his cognitive cloudiness, the accused is not fit to plead; thus, he cannot instruct a lawyer and clearly understand the charge,” Doctor Owiti states in his report.
The report also revealed that the accused described himself as a Nairobi street dweller and that he found himself hospitalised at KNH. ICU in 2022 with problems of neurological disorder and type I diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent).
“Nililelewa kwa barabara za Nairobi,” the report quoted Kalombotole as saying.
Kalombotole, whose medical history is unknown, lived in the Majengo area of Nairobi, but claims that he does not know his parents nor whether he has siblings.
Hearing of the case has been slated for October 26, 2026.
