Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has come out swinging to demand that justice be served, following the inhumane murder of 9-year-old Baby Shantel Waruguru.

In a post on Facebook on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Kahiga condemned the act, using the strongest words possible as he joined residents in mourning the young girl.

The governor said the killing had deeply shaken Nyeri County, describing it as a painful reminder of growing threats to the safety of children, particularly girls.

He called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and professionally to ensure those responsible are brought to book.

In his statement, Kahiga expressed sympathy to the family, saying the child’s life had been cruelly cut short before she could realise her dreams.

“This evening, my heart goes out to the late Shantel Waruguru Kagema, a nine-year-old rose flower that was cut off before budding,” he said.

The governor noted that the nature of the crime had caused widespread anger and grief across the county, adding that such acts should never be tolerated in society.

He urged investigators to leave no stone unturned and to ensure a watertight case is presented in court.

“I urge law enforcers and the justice system to make sure a conviction is obtained and that the suspect faces the full force of the law,” Kahiga said.

Calls for swift justice

Kahiga further observed that the killing comes at a time when the country is still grappling with similar cases involving young children, noting that communities are yet to heal from past tragedies.

He said the recurrence of such incidents points to a need for stronger protection mechanisms for children.

“These horrible acts against young girls are becoming too common,” he said, calling for faster investigations and quick dispensation of justice to restore public confidence.

The county government, he added, is working closely with security agencies to support investigations and ensure calm in affected areas.

Kahiga concluded by offering his condolences to the bereaved family and calling on residents to remain vigilant as authorities pursue justice for Baby Shantel.
