DCI nab notorious gang members in Diani
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two persons of interest linked to criminal activities along the Diani beachfront.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, February 9, 2026, the arrests were confirmed as part of a targeted operation by officers stationed at Diani Police Station, forming part of a wider security sweep aimed at restoring safety to the popular coastal destination.
According to the agency, the suspects are believed to be key figures in a gang that has been terrorising residents and visitors in the Tanduri area.
“Police officers based at Diani Police Station have arrested two suspects believed to be key members of a criminal gang that has been terrorising members of the public in the Tanduri area along the Diani beachfront,” DCI stated.
The two persons of interest are currently in police custody at Diani Police Station, where they are undergoing processing ahead of formal arraignment.
The investigative body said the operation is part of a broader effort to dismantle organised criminal networks that disrupt peace and threaten public safety in the region.
The DCI has urged members of the public to report suspicious activities, promising anonymity for those who provide information.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its mission to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence,” the agency wrote.
Police target coastal gangs
The arrests come days after a series of violent incidents along the coast, which saw young men armed with machetes and other crude weapons attacking security personnel, residents, and visitors.
Authorities reported cases ranging from daytime muggings to violent robberies, including assaults on boda-boda riders and shop owners, as well as attacks on cruise ship passengers.
These incidents prompted intensified patrols and targeted operations by the National Police Service, aiming to dismantle criminal networks and prevent further harm to the public.
During these operations, officers were authorised to use firearms if confronted with armed resistance, a measure aimed at neutralising threats and restoring order.
Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno emphasised that suspects had been given clear warnings to surrender or vacate the region, with the full force of the law ready to be applied against anyone continuing violent activities.
