Embakasi Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has expressed confidence that Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine will emerge victorious in Uganda’s presidential election, despite what he described as intimidation and systematic frustration by state authorities

Speaking during an interview at a local TV station on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Embakasi East MP said the current political environment in Uganda does not reflect a free and fair campaign season.

According to Babu, Bobi Wine has been forced to campaign under extreme security conditions, including wearing bulletproof gear, due to constant threats to his safety.

“I don’t think that is a campaign season because you find a presidential aspirant campaigning while wearing bulletproof everywhere. The police are trying to prevent him from going to campaign, and that is already a clear breaking of the electoral laws,” he said.

Babu Owino argued that the heavy police presence and restrictions placed on Bobi Wine’s movements point to deliberate efforts to frustrate his campaign.

He added that such actions only reinforce the opposition leader’s resolve and popularity among Ugandans, particularly the youth.

The outspoken MP further claimed that the shutdown of the internet during the election period was a clear indicator of what he termed electoral manipulation.

“I talked to Bobi, and I told him that as things stand, the fact that President Museveni has shut down the internet clearly tells you what is happening,” Babu stated.

Using a metaphor to describe political power, Babu Owino said leadership naturally gravitates towards the bold and youthful, suggesting that Bobi Wine represents the future of Uganda’s politics.

“Power is like a beautiful lady. She loves to associate with the young who are bold, not the old who are cold,” he said.

Despite the challenges facing Bobi Wine’s campaign, Babu maintained that the musician-turned-politician remains on the right path and enjoys widespread support across Uganda.

“Bobi still has a future, and in this presidential election, I’m very sure Bobi Wine is going to win.”
