Four people have voluntarily handed over illegal firearms to the police in Elgeyo Marakwet County, marking another step toward improving security in the region. The surrender took place at Embobut Police Station, where the four illicit weapons were received and safely secured, pending further police action.

Authorities say that such initiatives are vital for reducing armed conflict, supporting peace-building, and creating safer environments for residents.

Community cooperation has been central to these efforts, with more individuals coming forward to help reduce the presence of illegal weapons. Police continue to appeal to anyone in possession of such firearms to surrender them at their nearest station.

“The National Police Service continues to receive illegally held firearms being voluntarily surrendered by members of the community across Elgeyo Marakwet County. Yesterday, four individuals voluntarily surrendered four illicit firearms at Embobut Police Station. The weapons were secured at the facility pending further police action. “It is also contributing significantly to the reduction of armed conflict in the region. The National Police Service continues to appeal to anyone in possession of an illegal firearm to surrender it at their nearest police station.”

This comes days after two people walked into Embobut Police Station and handed over their weapons.

In a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS) on Saturday, December 6, 2025, one of the two surrendered AK-47 rifles was loaded with 22 rounds of ammunition.

“Two individuals yesterday voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms to police officers at Embobut Police Station in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The surrendered weapons included two AK-47 rifles. One was loaded with twenty-two rounds of ammunition, while the second was handed in with an empty magazine,” the police said.

The NPS noted that the disarmament drive is gradually shifting mindsets, with local leaders and elders encouraging dialogue and cooperation.

“The voluntary handover forms part of the ongoing disarmament exercise, which continues to take root in the region and is contributing to improved peace and stability. Security agencies, working closely with community members, have been encouraging the surrender of illegal weapons to help secure lives and livelihoods. Since the commencement of the disarmament operation, a total of three hundred and fourteen illegal firearms have been recovered across Elgeyo Marakwet County,” the statement added.

“The National Police Service applauds residents, elders, and local leadership for their cooperation and continued support. The Service remains committed to ensuring lasting peace and urges more individuals in possession of illegal weapons to surrender them for the safety and well-being of all.”
