Police have arrested one person and recovered a huge haul of drugs after a successful operation in Homa Bay.

The raid was conducted on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Oyugis town in Homa Bay County, in a manhunt that had been launched by the security officers.

The person of interest had earlier escaped a police dragnet, leading to a manhunt that saw officers based at Oyugis Police Station smoke him out from his hideout.

“Police officers from Oyugis Police Station in Homa Bay County have arrested a 22-year-old person of interest following a successful manhunt conducted yesterday in Oyugis Town,” read the statement released on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

According to the National Police Service, the 22-year-old fled and abandoned a significant amount of drugs and alcohol.

“The suspect had earlier attempted to evade arrest, abandoning a substantial quantity of illicit alcohol and drugs in the process,” NPS added.

What police officers recovered

Police recovered a huge haul of drugs, including 600 rolls of bhang and 20 litres of chang’aa.

The raid was hailed as a significant step in the fight against illegal drugs and alcohol in the area, with police linking the vice to criminal activities in the area.

“Officers recovered around 600 rolls of bhang and 20 litres of chang’aa, dealing a significant blow to the illegal trade of narcotics and illicit brew in the area and reinforcing sustained efforts to curb criminal activity in the region,” the police stated.

The person of interest was taken in for processing and arraignment in court, with all the items recovered during the operation also taken by the police as exhibits.

The suspect was placed in custody pending arraignment in court, while the exhibits have been secured at the same station. The National Police Service remains committed to combating illicit drugs and alcohol nationwide,” the statement added.

The arrest comes in the wake of a sustained operation to rein in on crime in the country, with similar arrests made in the Coast region, where significant gains have been made in the fight against criminal gangs operating in the region.
