2025 deadly accidents that forced Kenya into painful national reflection
Road accidents have continued to claim hundreds of Kenyans and millions globally.
You start your private car, board a matatu ready to connect with your loved ones, and reach destinations, but sadly, along the way, the unfortunate happens.

2025 has been a very sad year if the number of Kenyans who breathed their last due to road accidents can be put under consideration.
Still, the year has left deep scars, forcing Kenya into painful national reflection on road safety, enforcement, infrastructure, and accountability.
Below are 11 major deadly incidents from January to December 2025 that have shaped the national conversation.

1. Moi’s Bridge, Kitale–Eldoret highway (December 10, 2025)
A multi-vehicle crash at Moi’s Bridge along the busy Kitale–Eldoret highway involved a tipper lorry, a public service vehicle, private cars and a donkey cart.
At least 1 person died while several others were seriously injured. Police pointed to mechanical failure and risky driving on a narrow section of the road, renewing debate on vehicle inspections and enforcement on known blackspots.

2. Eldoret–Kitale head-on collision (January 3, 2025)
Early in the year, a head-on collision near Soy along the Eldoret–Kitale road claimed about 9 to 10 lives, including children.
A lorry veered into a matatu, killing passengers instantly. Authorities cited loss of control, speeding, and unsafe overtaking, setting a grim tone for road safety discussions in 2025.

3. Malindi light aircraft crash (January 10, 2025)
A light aircraft crash-landed near the Malindi–Mombasa highway and burst into flames, killing 3 people on the ground and injuring others. Investigators focused on possible mechanical failure.
The incident widened the safety debate beyond roads to include aviation activity near populated areas.
4. Mombasa apartment boiler explosion (January 14, 2025)
A domestic boiler explosion in an apartment left 2 visitors with severe burns, one of whom later died.
The tragedy highlighted gaps in household safety standards, regulation of installations and public awareness around domestic energy use.

5. Kariandusi family tragedy, Nairobi–Nakuru highway (September 28, 2025)
A devastating crash near Kariandusi wiped out an extended family travelling together. Between 13 and 16 relatives died after a matatu collided head-on with a trailer.
CCTV footage showed both vehicles moving at speed, reviving calls for safer highway design and stricter control of heavy commercial traffic.
6. Gatanga River Plunge, Murang’a County (October 26, 2025)
At Wacengu Bridge in Gatanga, a vehicle ferrying family members plunged into a river after reportedly suffering brake failure.

Six people died while six others were injured. The absence of guardrails and the bridge’s design became central to public anger and calls for urgent infrastructure upgrades.
7. Nithi Bridge plunge, Tharaka Nithi County (October 14, 2025)
A heavily loaded lorry lost control on the steep descent at Nithi Bridge and plunged into the river below, killing 2 people.
Residents again flagged the bridge as a long-standing blackspot, questioning why promised redesigns had not been implemented despite repeated fatalities.

8. Nyandarua bus crash, Ol Kalou area (June 9, 2025)
A bus travelling through Nyandarua County lost control during heavy rain and went down a slope. Six people died, and about 35 were injured.
Poor weather, slippery roads and speed were cited, reinforcing concerns about driving practices during adverse conditions.
9. Naivasha rail crossing collision (August 7, 2025)
A collision between a bus and a train at a rail crossing left between 4 and 6 people dead.
The accident reignited debate on the safety of level crossings, warning systems and driver awareness at railway intersections.

10. Sango village family crash, Lugari, Kakamega County (December 1, 2025)
A vehicle heading to a funeral crashed at Sango village, killing 9 family members.
The tragedy, coming just weeks before the festive season, deeply shook communities in western Kenya and highlighted the risks of long-distance travel on rural roads.
11. Cyrus Jirongo fatal collision, Naivasha, Nairobi–Nakuru Highway (December 13, 2025)
In the early hours of 13 December 2025, a head-on collision occurred along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, Naivasha, when a private vehicle travelling towards Nairobi veered into the path of an oncoming passenger bus.
The vehicle was being driven by the late Cyrus Jirongo, the Moi-era Cabinet Minister who once served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency.
The bus was carrying about 65 passengers at the time.

According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the private car entered the highway from a petrol station and failed to give way before crossing into the opposite lane, where it collided with the bus.
The sole occupant of the private car died on the spot, while passengers on the bus were left shaken, and some required medical attention.
