Growing up without a father is an experience shared by many children around the world, and research shows that this absence can leave lasting emotional and social effects.

According to studies highlighted by The Fatherhood Project, conducted by a US Organisation, All For Kids, children with active, involved fathers gain significant advantages during childhood and adolescence.

These benefits include better emotional health, stronger social relationships, and improved well-being. However, when a father is absent, the impact can be deeply felt throughout a child’s development.

The Fatherhood Project and the Father Engagement Programme work to empower fathers to be present, active, and emotionally available. Their research shows that father involvement is not only beneficial but essential for children’s overall growth.

Unfortunately, father absence remains a major yet often overlooked issue in many families.

influence on emotional well-being

Research continues to show that children without fathers face challenges that begin even before birth. A father’s attitudes during pregnancy, his behaviour at that time, and the state of the father-mother relationship can all affect pregnancy outcomes.

When a father is emotionally absent or uninvolved, the risks for negative birth outcomes may increase.

As children grow, the absence of a father becomes more visible in their emotional and social development. School-aged children who maintain a good relationship with their fathers are less likely to experience depression, disruptive behaviour, or lying.

Below are four major effects of growing up without a father:

Higher risk of emotional struggles

Children without fathers may face increased feelings of sadness, anxiety, or loneliness. Without a father’s guidance or emotional support, they may find it harder to manage their emotions as they grow older.

Increased behavioural challenges

Studies show that children without present fathers are more likely to experience disruptive behaviour, including acting out at school or struggling with discipline.

The lack of a strong male role model can affect how they behave in different environments.

Difficulty forming healthy social relationships

A father’s presence helps shape how children interact with others. When absent, children may struggle with trust, communication, or developing prosocial behaviours, making social growth more challenging.

Reduced confidence and self-esteem

Children often look to their fathers for validation, encouragement, and support. Without this influence, they may grow up doubting themselves or questioning their worth.

Understanding these effects helps highlight the importance of father involvement. When fathers are active, supportive, and emotionally engaged, they contribute to healthier, happier, and more resilient children.
