Mugithi icon Tonny Young surprises young boy who moved hearts performing his songs

Mugithi singer Tonny Young has left a young Kikuyu boy emotional after visiting him at his primary school, following viral clips of the boy performing some of his classic hits with a rare sweet voice.

In a livestream on Kururia’s Facebook page on Monday, February 2, 2026, Tonny Young is seen warmly greeting the boy and giving him a chance to perform the hit he had been singing in the viral clips.

Speaking at the school after the head teacher convened an assembly for him to address the boy in the presence of all the students, Tonny praised the boy’s talent and confidence.

“I decided to look for this boy to surprise him, not because he sings well or because people urged me to do so, but because of the confidence he displays. He really has great confidence,” Tonny said.

The singer explained that he first became aware of the young performer through a video sent to him by his friend Mutonyi.

He noted that the boy had impressed him not only with his singing skills but also with the self-assurance he displayed in the clips.

“My name is Tonny Young, and I am a Mugithi artiste. A video was sent to me by my friend Mutonyi. I usually wake up around 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. because I work late into the night. Most nights, I perform at different venues where I have bookings. On the day the video was sent to me, I was asleep, but when I woke up, I saw that Mutonyi had sent me a video of the boy singing. I noticed immediately that he was singing very well,” Tonny shared.

Tonny Young further highlighted the unique connection he felt, noting that the boy shares his name and also supports the Arsenal football club, a personal interest he found endearing. He encouraged the boy to continue performing and also invited his brother, who is likewise a talented singer, to showcase his skills alongside him.

“I wanted him to sing for us the same way he performed in the viral video, and it was exciting to learn that he is also called Tonny, just like me. I also heard he supports Arsenal, which is great.

The singer revealed that both he and fellow mugithi artiste Samidoh had stepped in to support the young talents.

Samidoh committed to paying the boy’s school fees for the next two years, while Tonny Young pledged to cover the remaining years until the boy completes Grade Nine.

“The headteacher informed me that this boy has a brother who also sings, so I invited him to come and perform as well. I also learned that they are fans of Samidoh. I want them to sing Samidoh’s songs, after which I will reveal what Samidoh has sent for them.

Samidoh instructed me to come here, and he will pay this boy’s school fees for two years. Since he is currently in Grade Five, I will cover the remaining years so he can complete Grade Nine,” he said as teachers and students clapped.

He also announced that the brother’s school fees balance would be cleared, and contributions from friends in the United States were added to support the young family.

“We will also clear his brother’s school fees balance. In addition, other friends of mine from the United States have contributed to support them as well,” Tonny said.
