How to get through the weekend when everyone else is at Summer Tides

If your social media feeds are full of beach photos, festival videos and groups of friends enjoying Summer Tides while you are at home, it is easy to feel like you are missing out.

The annual beach festival has become one of the biggest youth events in Africa, attracting thousands of people who gather to enjoy music, fashion, travel and beach life. But missing one event does not mean your weekend has to be boring.

If you skipped the festival because of work, school, money or simply because it was not in your plans, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your time and avoid spending the weekend feeling left out.

Remember that social media only shows the highlights

People usually post the best moments from any event. You are seeing carefully chosen photos, exciting videos and happy memories, not the long traffic, queues, tired feet or unexpected problems that come with large festivals.

Instead of comparing your weekend to someone’s highlight reel, focus on creating moments that make you happy. Taking a break from social media for a few hours can also help if the constant updates are making you feel like you are missing out.

Plan your own fun

You do not need a beach festival to have a good weekend. Invite a few friends over, organise a movie night, try a new restaurant or visit a place you have never been before in your town.

You could also create your own playlist featuring your favourite DJs and enjoy a mini dance party at home. The goal is to give yourself something to look forward to instead of spending the day scrolling through other people’s adventures.

Use the weekend to recharge

Festivals are exciting, but they can also be exhausting. If life has been busy, this could be the perfect chance to catch up on sleep, read a book, watch a series you have been putting off or spend quality time with family.

Sometimes a quiet weekend leaves you feeling more refreshed than one packed with activities.

Save for the next big event

If money was the reason you missed Summer Tides, use that feeling as motivation instead of disappointment. Set aside a small amount each month so that when the next festival or concert comes around, you will be better prepared. Planning also gives you something exciting to work towards throughout the year.

Celebrate your own weekend

Summer Tides has grown into one of Africa’s biggest annual beach festivals, bringing together local and international DJs, fashion, beach culture and thousands of music lovers. It is easy to understand why so many young people look forward to it every year.

But your weekend does not have to be defined by whether you attended. By the time Monday arrives, what matters most is that you enjoyed your weekend in a way that worked for you, not that it looked like everyone else’s.
