Alex Mwakideu reacts to Summer Tides’ backlash with message to Malindi residents
Media personality Alex Mwakideu has responded to the criticism surrounding the Summer Tides event in Malindi that happened over the weekend.
He spoke after some people called for the event to be banned if reports of inappropriate behaviour in public spaces are confirmed. Mwakideu urged residents of Malindi and Lamu to change how they view the situation.
“Wengi wamehojiwa Malindi wakasema jamani, vitu walioona Malindi wakati wa Summertides wamasema hawajawai kuona tangu ulimwengu uumbwe. Sodoma na Gomorah ilipelekwa Malindi. Sasa wanasema wamechoka,” Alex Mwakideu said on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

He explained that some residents have said the event went too far. According to him, they believe Malindi has always been known for ustaarabu and tourism. He said they feel the event has affected that image.
“Wanasema mwache Malindi yetu iko na ustaarabu. Iko na waturisti. Wanasema hii ya Summertides imevuka mpaka,” Alex Mwakideu said.
Debate over SummerTides
Mwakideu, however, said people should look at the issue differently. He explained that the younger generation is living in a different time and that entertainment has become part of modern culture. He urged residents of Malindi and Lamu to embrace that reality.
“Mimi nawaambia ndugu zangu wa Malindi na Lamu, change your thinking. Saa hizi tuko na kizazi kipya na kiko ulimwengu mzima. Sisi tunafuata burudani na sherehe,” Alex Mwakideu said.

His remarks came after Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria called for the Summer Tides event to be stopped. Mosiria raised concerns over videos said to have been recorded during the weekend gathering. He said the event should be banned if reports of inappropriate behaviour in public spaces are confirmed.
Mosiria also said parents should know where their children are and the activities they take part in. He explained that young people attending entertainment events should have enough guidance and supervision. His comments added to the ongoing discussion surrounding the event.
“Summer Tides should be banned completely in Kenya. How can our young people openly engage in sexual acts in public spaces, and nobody is talking about it?” Geoffrey Mosiria said.
The debate over the Summer Tides event has continued after the different views shared by Mwakideu and Mosiria. While Mwakideu called on residents to change their thinking, Mosiria maintained that the event should be banned if the reported behaviour in public spaces is confirmed.
