Every generation has madness: Ciru Muriuki recalls Masaku Sevens amid Summer Tides backlash
Media personality Ciru Muriuki has come to the defence of Generation Z amid the ongoing backlash over the Summer Tides festival, arguing that every generation has had its share of wild behaviour.
In a video shared on her official social media accounts on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Ciru urged Gen Z not to believe claims that they are the most immoral generation, saying such criticism ignores the experiences of previous generations.
“Gen Z, do not let my generation lie to you that you are the most immoral; do not do it,” Ciru said.
Drawing from her own experience as a millennial, Ciru recalled the once-popular Masaku Sevens rugby tournament, claiming it was known for excessive partying.
She said she remembers a time when chemists in Nairobi reportedly ran out of emergency contraceptive pills in the week following the annual event, illustrating that youthful excess was not unique to Gen Z.

“Because I am a millennial, I remember going for Masaku Sevens and then remember how the week after Masaku Sevens, all chemists in Nairobi did not have Postinor P2,” she recalled.
Ciru also argued that the generations before Millennials had their own moments of reckless behaviour.
“The generation before us, the Gen X, they went crazy in the 90s,” Ciru remarked.
According to the media personality, the biggest difference between Gen Z and previous generations is the lack of privacy in the digital age.
She said today’s young people are the first generation whose social lives are constantly documented and shared online, unlike Millennials and older generations, whose activities largely went unrecorded.
“Let’s not even talk about the boomers,” she added.
“Every generation has madness; the only thing is that, and I feel so sad for Gen Z, is that you guys are the first generation not to have privacy when you are turning up. We turned up, and there’s no record of our activities.”
Additionally, Ciru urged the older generations to stop portraying Gen Z as the worst generation in history, insisting that every generation has made mistakes.
“Every generation misbehaves; do not let people my age and older try to tell you that you guys are the worst people to have ever lived; you are not even in the top ten,” Ciru stated.
