Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has called for the Summer Tides event in Malindi to be stopped, raising concerns over videos said to have been recorded during the weekend gathering.

In a video shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Mosiria said the event should be banned if reports of inappropriate behaviour in public spaces are confirmed.

The official expressed concern about young people attending entertainment events without enough guidance and supervision, saying parents should be aware of where their children are and the activities they take part in.

“Summer Tides should be banned completely in Kenya. How can our young people openly engage in sexual acts in public spaces, and nobody is talking about it?” Mosiria said.

He added that silence from society could allow harmful behaviour to continue among young people. “If I keep quiet, who will expose this moral decay in our society?” he posed.

Concern over viral videos

Mosiria’s remarks followed the circulation of videos online linked to the Malindi event.

He said the clips, if genuine, raised serious questions about public decency, safety and the well-being of those involved. “The videos circulating online from Malindi are deeply disturbing. If they are authentic, they appear to show young men and women engaging in unprotected sexual activity in public,” he said.

Mosiria urged the relevant authorities to establish whether the footage was recorded at the event and take action where necessary. He said organisers of large gatherings should be held accountable for ensuring their events are safe and follow the law.

Message to parents

The county official also directed his message to parents, asking them to take a more active interest in how their children spend money sent to them for trips and social events.

He said young people need support and guidance, especially when travelling away from home for parties and other entertainment activities.  “To all parents, before you send money to your sons and daughters, especially this weekend, make sure you know where they are and what activities they are participating in,” he said.

Mosiria noted that protecting young people should not be left to parents alone, saying communities, event organisers and public authorities all have a role to play.

Call for investigation

He further called for an investigation into the claims shared online, saying the issue should be handled carefully and based on verified information.

“As a society, we cannot remain silent. We all have a responsibility to protect our children, uphold public decency, and promote values that safeguard the health, dignity, and future of our young people,” Mosiria said.

At the time of publication, organisers of the Summer Tides event had not publicly responded to Mosiria’s call for the event to be banned or the claims surrounding the viral videos.
