Karua revisits 5 defining moments that shaped her political career as she turns 69

Veteran politician and Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has reflected on the defining moments that shaped her decades-long political career as she prepares to enter her 70s, saying the experiences strengthened her principles and commitment to public service.
In a post shared on her official Instagram page, Karua likened her life journey to iron being forged over time, writing: “If my thirties were the years when the iron was being sharpened, then my forties and fifties were the years when it hardened.”
Defining moments in public service
Karua recalled being 43 when she walked out of a public gathering after then-President Daniel arap Moi refused to allow the opposition to speak. She said that in a country where many feared challenging those in power, she raised the Democratic Party symbol as a reminder that democracy should never be silenced.
She also reflected on her time in government, saying she unexpectedly took over the Water Ministry but embraced the responsibility and helped transform the sector. Later, while serving as Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, she said her belief in constitutionalism became even stronger.
“The law must apply equally to everyone, however powerful, and public office must come with accountability,” she wrote.
Integrity above office
Karua also looked back on Kenya’s journey towards the new Constitution, describing it as a difficult process that required negotiations, disagreements and compromise. Despite working alongside people she deeply disagreed with, she said she learned that nation-building requires finding common ground without abandoning one’s principles.
The former Justice minister further revealed that she resigned from government in her early fifties after concluding she could no longer effectively deliver the mandate entrusted to her.
“For me, integrity has never been about holding office; it has been about honouring purpose,” she stated.
Karua also reflected on her unsuccessful presidential bid at the age of 55, saying the loss did not weaken her commitment to serving Kenyans because public service is greater than any position, title or election.
Looking ahead
Often referred to as the “Iron Lady” of Kenyan politics, Karua said she has never viewed the nickname as a symbol of hardness but rather as a commitment to never bend where justice is concerned.
She concluded by encouraging people in their 40s and 50s to let experience make them wiser, strengthen their principles and pursue a purpose greater than any title they may hold, before ending her message with a hopeful declaration: “Next: my 60s.”
