Police seize 2,000 litres of Kangara in major illicit brew raid in Kisii

Police in Kisii Central Sub-County have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit alcohol after seizing 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa during a major crackdown in Kiogoro Location.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement shared via social media on the night of Wednesday, November 19, 2025, said the operation, led by officers from Kiogoro Police Station, targeted what authorities described as a persistent hub of illegal brew production in Riangombenene Village.

Acting on intelligence, NPS says the officers raided the premises of a suspected Chang’aa manufacturer, catching the person of interest mid-operation.

During the raid, police recovered 2,000 litres of Kangara, the fermented precursor used to distil Chang’aa, and 40 litres of the finished illicit brew ready for distribution.

“Police in Kisii Central Sub-County have intensified their campaign against the production and sale of illicit alcohol, following a successful raid in Kiogoro Location. In a coordinated operation led by officers from Kiogoro Police Station, authorities targeted individuals involved in the illegal manufacture of Chang’aa in Riangombenene Village. The raid resulted in the recovery of 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa,” the statement read in part.

One arrested

A female person of interest was arrested at the scene and taken into custody at Kiogoro Police Station. The seized items have been secured as exhibits, as the suspect awaits processing and arraignment in court.

“One female suspect was arrested and escorted to Kiogoro Police Station, where the confiscated items were secured as evidence. She will be processed and arraigned in court to face charges,” NPS stated.

Operations to continue

The police say similar operations are set to continue across the sub-county, reiterating the authority’s commitment to safeguarding communities from harmful substances and to dismantling the networks involved in the production of unlawful alcohol.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to safeguarding communities from harmful substances and to dismantling the networks involved in the production of unlawful alcohol. Similar operations are set to continue across the sub-county,” the statement read.

Authorities have urged members of the public to support the crackdown by volunteering information on suspicious brewing and distribution activities.
