Kisii: Police destroy 400 litres of Kangara as person of interest flees

Police officers in Kisii County have destroyed more than 400 litres of Kangara during a major crackdown on illicit brews in Nyamanani Village, Eburi Sub-location, Nyansakia Location.

According to a statement by the National police Service (NPS), the operation, which took place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, was led by a multi-agency team made up of police officers and National Government Administration Officers.

The officers discovered the illicit brew hidden deep inside a sugarcane plantation, where it had been concealed to evade detection.

During the raid, a person of interest believed to be behind the illegal production and distribution of the brew escaped from the scene.

Police are currently pursuing the individual and have launched an intensive manhunt to ensure he is apprehended and brought before the court.

The National Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illicit brews and other harmful substances that endanger public health and safety.

The service emphasised that such operations will continue across the country as part of efforts to safeguard communities from the dangers of unregulated alcohol production and consumption.

“A multi-agency team comprising police officers and National Government Administration Officers conducted a successful crackdown on illicit brews today, 28th October 2025, in Nyamanani Village, Eburi Sub-location, Nyansakia Location, Kisii County. During the operation, the team destroyed over 400 litres of Kangara, which had been concealed in a sugarcane plantation,” the police said.

Adding;

“Police officers are currently pursuing the main suspect, who fled the scene, with a view to apprehending and arraigning him. The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to eradicating illicit brews and other harmful substances that pose a threat to public health and safety.”

Separate operation

This comes weeks after police in Kakamega County destroyed 640 litres of illicit brew following a coordinated crackdown in Shisele, Shikhombelo, and Mukoyani areas.

In a statement released on Monday, September 29, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) said officers raided the home of a suspected brewer and recovered containers of Kangara along with brewing equipment.

The suspect, however, escaped into a nearby sugarcane plantation and is currently being pursued.

Authorities confirmed that all seized items have been secured as evidence and reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating illegal alcohol networks, urging the public to share information to aid ongoing efforts.
