Police in Likoni have nabbed a person of interest and seized a significant quantity of cannabis in a successful anti-narcotics operation conducted on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS) released on Sunday, August 31, 2025, officers from the Likoni Sub-County headquarters acted on a tip-off from members of the public who reported suspicious activities linked to a notorious drug peddler in the Tonge Nyama area.

“During the raid, the officers arrested one suspect and recovered 284 large rolls of cannabis sativa, which had been stashed in a sack inside his house,” read part of the police X statement.

The police said the person of interest is currently being held at Likoni Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, September 1, 2025, to face drug possession and trafficking charges.

The NPS commended residents for their vigilance and cooperation, which they said played a crucial role in the success of the operation.

“We thank members of the public for providing the information that led to this arrest. This is a clear example of community policing in action,” the statement said.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug networks and protecting communities, especially young people, from the harmful effects of narcotics.

“The Service remains committed to the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, and this operation is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard communities from the dangers of narcotics,” police said.

This seizure is the latest in a series of crackdowns targeting drug trafficking hotspots along the Coast.

Police are urging the public to continue reporting suspicious activity as part of a broader strategy to combat crime and enhance public safety in the region.

Elsewhere, Police impounded a motorcycle transporting 25 kilograms of bhang in Kakamega as officers intensify the fight against illegal drugs.

In a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday, August 28, 2025, officers explained that the incident happened on Wednesday along a road in Matungu, Kakamega.

When the motorcyclist approached the checkpoint, he was ordered to stop, but defied the directive. He instead attempted to speed past the officers, running over a spike barrier in the process. The motorcycle’s front tyre was punctured, forcing the rider to halt a short distance from the roadblock.

Sensing imminent arrest, the individual abandoned the motorcycle together with the consignment of cannabis sativa and fled on foot. Police recovered the motorcycle and the 25 kilograms of bhang, which were taken into custody as exhibits.

A manhunt has since been launched to track down the fugitive, with authorities vowing to intensify crackdowns on drug trafficking networks across Kakamega and other parts of the country.

“Following an alert from Koyonzo Police Station, officers from Matungu Police Station in Kakamega mounted a roadblock on 27th August 2027 to intercept an individual allegedly transporting Cannabis Sativa on a motorcycle. As the person approached the roadblock, he was flagged down. He defied the order to stop, drove over the spike barrier, and had his front tyre punctured. He stopped a few metres from the roadblock, abandoned the motorcycle, and escaped on foot,” NPS said.
