The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied being involved in the abduction of X influencer Gideon Kibet.
The crime busters have also denied owning a Subaru car that Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah claimed was used to take away Kibet.
In a statement on Thursday, December 26, 2024, DCI noted that it was not involved in any kind of extrajudicial activities.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) takes note of the statement made by Senator Okiya Omtatah Okoiti regarding the reported sighting of a white Subaru vehicle linked to the alleged abduction of Mr Gideon Kibet. We wish to emphasize that these allegations are being taken with utmost seriousness.
Firstly, we wish to clarify that the DCI categorically denies any association with the vehicle in question. The suggestion that a vehicle belonging to the DCI was involved in any alleged abduction is not only unfounded but also sensationalizes a sensitive issue that is currently under thorough investigation,” DCI Director of Liaison & Corporate Communication John Marete stated.
Marete says that DCI is working to solve several cases of adbuctions which have been reported in the recent days.
“The Inspector General (IG) has clearly stated that all police operations are conducted within the confines of the Constitution and established legal frameworks. The DCI supports this stance and reassures the public that no extrajudicial actions will be tolerated within our ranks,” Marete added.
“We have received reports of alleged abductions, and the DCI is diligently working to investigate these claims. We urge any individuals with credible information on these matters to come forward and cooperate with our independent investigations. The DCI remains open and transparent in handling such cases, ensuring that justice is pursued without prejudice or compromise.”
DCI also urged Kenyans to engage in a constructive and solution-oriented social dialogue rather than speculative one.
“The integrity of our investigations is paramount, and we take any attempts to undermine this process seriously. The DCI is fully committed to expediting these investigations, and we urge public leaders to refrain from making speculative statements that may hinder the progress of ongoing investigations,” he added.
Omtatah reported that Kibet was abducted using a Subaru Forester which was parked near his (Omtatah’s) office.
“We have done our best to try and find @Kibet_bull since learning that he’s missing. I led teams in conducting searches in police stations yesterday, spoke with persons of interest, reported the matter to the police, obtained information about the Subaru Forester mounted with communication equipment, ran the plate number details through the NTSA website, established that the plates were fake, and even reached out to the family. If you have information that can help us find @Kibet_bull kindly come forward and help us get to the bottom of this matter,” Omtatah stated.
Abductions
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) says there have been 13 more cases of abductions or enforced disappearances in the last three months.
In a statement on Thursday, December 26, 2024, KNCHR said there have been 82 cases of abductions and forced disappearances since June 2024.
The body says seven of the recent abduction cases were reported in December 2024 with six of them still missing, bringing to 29 the total number of persons still missing since June 2024.
“The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) continues to monitor with concern the worrying pattern of abductions in several parts of our country. The Commission notes that these abductions are perpetuated clandestinely, with unidentified armed persons. The Commission further notes that those abducted have been vocal dissidents, particularly on social platforms. There have been 13 more cases of abductions or enforced disappearances in the last three months bringing to 82 the total cases since June 2024,” KNCHR says.
“Seven of the recent abduction cases were reported in the month of December 2024 with six of them still missing, bringing to 29 the total number of persons still missing since June 2024. The Commission strongly condemns these abductions which fall outside the dictates of the Constitution. Abductions are torture, cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment: a non derogable right. They have no place in a democratic state like ours! The Commission warns that if these patterns of abductions continue, then we shall be rapidly retrogressing back to the dark days of our history when such attacks were primarily to inflict fear on any person critical of the Government.”
Among those reported abducted in December 2024 include Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Wanyiri Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Naomi aka @Jabertotoo, Gideon Kibet aka Kibet Bull and Rony Kiplang’at.
