The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a person of interest after a video emerged online following the torture and death of Amos Sang of Bomet County.

According to a statement from the sleuths, two men believed to be persons of interest in the case have been detained in Ruaraka and Longisa Police stations.

Police say that two persons of interest arrived at Sang’s residence in Teduet village in the Chemaner area of Bomet County and forcibly removed him from the house.

The police believe that Sang was tied up and hung from a pulley before the two persons of interest in the case began torturing him with whips.

After becoming unconscious, the two are suspected of returning Sang inside the house and leaving him there for dead.

Succumbed to injuries

“Tragically, the victim succumbed to the torture. This was confirmed at Longisa Referral Hospital, where his body is currently preserved at the facility’s morgue, awaiting post-mortem examination,” DCI said.

Police say after conducting preliminary investigations and searching the house of one of the persons of interest, they managed to confiscate items believed to have been used during the torture and subsequent killing of the deceased.

“In the wake of this incident, the investigators conducted a thorough search at Cheruiyot’s residence, where they recovered crucial evidence, including a pulley and a chain believed to have been used in the assault,” DCI noted.

Adding: “An empty jerrycan believed to have contained diesel, which was reportedly used during the torture, was also recovered. At the victim’s residence, clothing soaked in diesel was also found, further implicating the suspects. The suspects will be arraigned to face appropriate charges.”

Motive

On the motive of the killing, detectives believe that the two persons of interest had accused Sang of stealing chicken and had followed him to his house before launching a series of tortures leading to his death.

This comes in the wake of an increase in femicide cases, which have attracted the attention of President William Ruto and the international community.

On Sunday, November 3, 2024, Ruto indicated that the government would go out of its way to address the surging cases of violence against women.

“We have a criminal problem and a moral problem; we need to address both of them. As a government, I want to promise you that we will go out of our way to provide resources for our police to deal with this challenge,” Ruto said.
