Tanzanian actress, Wema Sepetu, has rubbished online reports claiming she had passed away, terming them false, hurtful, and dangerous.

The actress, who was crowned Miss Tanzania in 2006 and has since become a household name in East Africa’s entertainment industry, came out strongly on Monday, July 14, 2025, through her Instagram page to set the record straight that she is very much alive.

The death rumours, which began circulating online over the weekend, caused widespread panic among her fans.

In a post on her official Instagram page, Sepetu shared screenshots of the misleading posts while expressing frustration at the recklessness of those behind the hoax

. “Kumbe nimefariki na sijui… Fake news!” she wrote, adding that such claims could cause unnecessary emotional harm to people close to her.

Her remarks were accompanied by a stern warning: “Mtakuja kuumiza watu wanaonipenda kwa pressure.” Translated, the message reads, “You will end up hurting people who love me with stress,” a statement that resonated with many of her followers, who quickly flooded her page with comments of relief and outrage over the misinformation.

Not the first time

This is not the first time Sepetu has had to deal with invasive public scrutiny, but the spread of false death reports marked a new low.

Her fans, visibly shaken, praised her swift response and called for accountability from platforms that allow such fake news to thrive.

The 36-year-old actress has long been a central figure in Tanzania’s film scene, popularly known as Bongo movies.

Since her pageantry days, she has successfully transitioned into acting, entrepreneurship, and advocacy.

Her openness about her past health challenges has earned her admiration from fans who see her as both glamorous and grounded.

Wema Sepetu’s case is the latest in a disturbing trend of celebrity death hoaxes in Africa. As digital misinformation continues to spread, her experience serves as a stark reminder of the real-life emotional toll such rumours can have not just on public figures, but on the people who care about them.
