Media personality Janet Mbugua has urged people to stand firm in their values instead of seeking approval from others.

In a thought-provoking message on Instagram on Sunday, October 5, 2025, she said many people lose their sense of self when they try too hard to be liked, even if it means compromising their beliefs.

Janet questioned what happens to someone’s integrity when they allow their values to be overlooked or violated just to appear nice. She made it clear that kindness should never come at the cost of truth or self-respect.

“What does it do to you when your value and your principles are bypassed or offended or violated because you tried to be nice? Nice is for pizza or ice cream. You are not pizza; you are not ice cream,” she wrote.

Her message emphasised that there is a clear difference between being good and being nice. While being good is guided by values, truth, and integrity, being nice often leads to silence and avoidance of uncomfortable but necessary conversations.

Choosing goodness over niceness

Janet said she has decided to choose goodness over niceness, even though it is not always easy. “Goodness is rooted in values, truth, and integrity. Niceness often avoids discomfort, even when it means staying silent,” she said.

She explained that she would rather stand for what is right than stay quiet to please others. The former news anchor added that justice, honesty, and accountability should always take precedence over popularity or acceptance.

“I’m choosing good over nice (and still won’t always get it right!), because justice, honesty, and accountability matter more than being liked,” she said.

Her post served as a reminder that personal principles and moral grounding are far more valuable than temporary approval from others. Janet also noted that not everyone will agree with you — and that is perfectly fine. “It’s okay not to be liked by everyone… Not everyone even agrees on Hawaiian pizza!” she added humorously.

Through her message, Janet encouraged people to remain true to themselves and speak out for what they believe in, even when it is uncomfortable. Her call to action was to choose integrity and authenticity over the need to please others.
