Dem Wa Facebook reveals she once played in Kenyan Women Premier League

Comedienne and digital content creator Millicent Ayuwa, widely known as Dem Wa Facebook, has revealed that she once played professional football in the Kenyan Women’s Premier League before venturing into comedy.
Speaking during an interview with a local podcast on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Dem Wa’s Facebook shared how football became both her passion and a means of survival during her school years.

“Nilianza kujisomesha nikiwa Class 8 juu my parents hawakuwa wanajiweza,” she recalled. “Hiyo time dad alikuwa anapiga matofali, mum anashughulika na mboga, so nikaamua tu nijitume. Nilikuwa nacheza ball, nikaanza kujilipia form one, naenda shule kucheza juu ya ball.”
After completing high school, she joined the Trans Nzoia Falcons, one of the women’s teams in the league. However, she noted that despite her dedication, female footballers were poorly compensated compared to their male counterparts.
“Unajua ball ya madem hailipi. Unapata tunacheza same league, mimi niko Falcon, Ogam anachezea Tusker. Wao wanapewa doo, wanapewa basi, wanalipwa allowances vizuri, but for the ladies, hata pads hatukuwa tunapewa,” she lamented.
According to her, women players could go for an entire year and earn as little as Ksh10,000.

“Nikiwa kwa football for five years, pesa niliwin pekee yake nikakuwa proud ya football ni ya Chapa Dimba na Safaricom. Nilimaliza Chapa Dimba nikafunga hiyo chapter,” she said.
She explained that although she was passionate about football, the lack of financial reward forced her to quit.
“Tulikuwa player 12 tukapewa 1 million. For the first time kwa football kushika kitu Ksh50, 000 and above ilikuwa hiyo time. Hizi zingine unapelekwa allowance ya Ksh1000. Nikasema football me nimewacha juu haina doo,” she concluded.
Harambee Stars
This comes a few months after Dem Wa Facebook congratulated Harambee Stars’ players for their spirited performance at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but urged leaders to go beyond celebrations and focus on the team’s welfare.
In a congratulatory message shared on her official Instagram account on Friday night, August 22, 2025, she called for the implementation of policies to ensure players earn a steady income.
In addition, the content creator praised the national team for making the country proud but cautioned that motivation should not end with the tournament.
“Congratulations Harambe Stars….. Motivation isiishie Hapa jamani. Now let’s implement policies that will ensure players make a steady income throughout sio kwa tournaments tu,” she said.
