Former Roots Party deputy leader Justina Wamae, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, warned that Kenyans could be headed for regret after the 2027 elections if the current political trend continues.

In a strongly worded post on X, Wamae aimed at the slogans currently dominating the political scene.

She said Kenyans were being trapped between wantam, meaning the one-term presidency idea associated with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp, and tutam, meaning the two-term push linked to President William Ruto’s allies.

“Fellow Kenyans wantam is good because tutam is bad. Kwani munabebwa aje, I agree tutam is very bad for the country, but we must go beyond because” she wrote.

Warning of empty promises

According to Wamae, Kenyans risk focusing on sideshows while forgetting the real issue that affects them daily, which is economic liberation.

She warned that the pattern of politics without substance would lead to yet another cycle of disappointment.

“As early as October 2027, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and the only explanation they will give you is that we once again inherited a dilapidated economy, even if you remove our trousers and cane our behind, there is no money and other stories”, Wamae added.

She said Kenyans must demand leaders who prioritise creating wealth and opportunities instead of selling slogans.

“Creating wealth for the nation, Kenya, and her citizens is the only agenda bigger than the shenanigans these two perceived leading horses in the race are selling to Kenyans”, she stated.

Mixed reactions online

Her message drew mixed reactions online. Some Kenyans praised her for speaking boldly, saying she had called out the hollow nature of political rallies.

Others accused her of sounding alarmist and downplaying the realities of succession politics.

But analysts noted that Wamae’s warning should not be dismissed.

They pointed out that Kenyans have in the past been promised change only to be left disappointed after every election cycle.

For Wamae, the point is clear. Without an economy-first agenda, Kenyans may find themselves back to the same old excuses in 2027, accompanied by what she calls weeping and gnashing of teeth.
