CECAFA Kagame Cup: FKF boss Hussein Mohammed challenges Gor Mahia to bring trophy home

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed has challenged 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup finalists Gor Mahia to bring home the regional trophy.
The Kenyan champions are set to face Rayon Sports in the final this Friday, August 7, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Amahoro Stadium, eyeing a fourth title and their first since 1985.
Ahead of the high-stakes final, Mohammed acknowledged Charles Akonnor’s effort in representing the country by reaching the final stages of the regional championship, imploring them to finish the task by clinching the ultimate prize.
“Gor Timbe Duto Yuakni! Best wishes to Gor Mahia FC in the CECAFA Kagame Cup finals today; you’ve represented the country well this far. Now, let’s crown it all by bringing the title home.”
The clash comes with much at stake after both sides navigated a gruelling tournament to reach the showpiece finale.
Road to final
Gor Mahia booked their ticket to the final through a hard-fought 8–7 penalty shootout victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal on Tuesday, August 4, following a 1–1 draw in regulation time. Head coach Charles Akonnor’s side had earlier topped Group A on goal difference, securing convincing wins against APR FC and Garde Républicaine despite a narrow setback against Uganda’s Vipers SC.
Meanwhile, Rayon Sports capitalised on home advantage to punch their ticket to the final, clinching top spot in Group C before comfortably dispatching Jamus SC 3–1 in the semi-finals.
Battle of the Champions
Speaking ahead of the clash, defender Mike Kibwage admitted that facing the Rwandan champions on their home turf in the final will be a challenge they are up for.
“We are motivated despite playing a team that will bank on home advantage. We know it won’t be easy; they have their home fans who will back their team, but we are determined to fight with the 11 on the pitch and make our fans and nation proud,” he said.
The centre back also reflected on K’Ogalo’s journey to the final, asserting that they can draw inspiration after qualifying through the much-billed group of death.
“We have worked so hard to be here; we came up against the best of the best in teams from different countries and emerged from the group of death,” he added.
A win for Gor Mahia will see them end the long wait for a Kenyan club to lift the regional honours. Tusker FC were the last winners of the Cup in 2008 when they defeated Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) 2–1 in Tanzania.
