Gor Mahia edge out Al Hilal to book CECAFA Kagame Cup final ticket

Record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia stretched their impressive run by booking their place in the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup final after defeating Sudan’s Al Hilal 8-7 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Sweet revenge
Gor Mahia had an opportunity to settle an old score when they faced the Sudanese outfit at the Pelé Stadium in Kigali.
Heading into the fixture, the Kenyan champions were haunted by their previous meeting with Al Hilal during the 2024 edition of the regional tournament in Tanzania, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat in the group stage.
While the Sudanese outfit eventually finished third, Gor Mahia failed to reach the podium. This time, however, the reward was much greater, with K’Ogalo booking a direct ticket to the final.
For Gor Mahia, the encounter carried significance beyond avenging that earlier defeat. The victory has moved them within touching distance of ending a wait of more than 40 years for the Kagame Cup title.
The tournament has also served as an important preparation platform as the club fine-tunes its squad ahead of the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
Head coach Charles Akonnor has overseen an encouraging run in Rwanda. Gor Mahia finished top of Group A on goal difference after convincing victories against APR FC and Garde Républicaine, although they also endured a narrow defeat to Uganda’s Vipers SC.
Despite the positive performances, injuries have disrupted the team’s progress. Winger Samuel Kapen has been ruled out for between six and 12 months after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Akonnor, nevertheless, stood by his decision to rotate players throughout the group phase, arguing that it was essential to preserve energy levels for the knockout rounds.
Tuesday’s contest was also expected to showcase two contrasting tactical approaches. Gor Mahia typically deploy an adventurous 4-3-3 system that relies on attacking full-backs to stretch opponents and create opportunities for the front line.
Al Hilal, coached by Guy Bukasa, prefer a disciplined 4-1-4-1 formation, with a holding midfielder providing defensive cover and maintaining the team’s compact shape.
Meanwhile, K’Ogalo held their nerve from the spot to seal victory and advance to Friday’s final, August 7, 2026, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between Jamus SC and Rayon Sports.
Friday’s final will be staged at Amahoro Stadium, with the third-place playoff taking place earlier on the same day.
