CAF Champions League: Rachier breaks silence after Gor Mahia’s shocking collapse vs Pyramids FC

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has opened up on happenings around the club after they suffered an embarrassing elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
Gor was knocked out in the preliminary stages of the competition after falling 5-1 to the Egyptian powerhouse in the second leg on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Speaking on the loss on Friday, September 18, 2026, in Nairobi, Rachier said that the hierarchy has started an investigation into the circumstances behind the shocking defeat.
“It is difficult to say anything positive about what happened in Cairo; we are still trying to grapple with the result. We got shocked, if anything, and humiliated. We now need to know what happened and why. It is something we are looking into,” Rachier said.
Despite trailing by two goals from the first leg meeting in Nairobi, the Kenyan champions failed to salvage any lingering pride on enemy territory, instead slumping to an even worse margin, much to the shock of the long-serving chairman.
“When we were going there, we thought we were prepared, but alas, we got beaten. It seems we were not quite prepared yet, and we have to be prepared,” he stated.
Reports of boycotts
The chair’s remarks come amid reports of turmoil going on at the club, with rumours rife about a section of players being handed suspensions after the dismal show. The decision seemed to have ruffled feathers within the playing unit, with the remaining lot threatening to boycott training in protest against the handling of their suspended teammates.
The development comes just a day before Gor Mahia open their Kenyan Premier League campaign against Murang’a Seal FC following a truce between the KPL League chairmen and the FKF.
Return leg debacle
In the return tie, Pyramids opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Walid El-Khati rose highest to head past Bryne Omondi. The hosts then doubled their money through Nasser Maher for a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Rulani Mokwoena’s charges got a third in the opening minute of added time through Youssef Obama, who tapped home from a cross.
After Paul Okoth had reduced the deficit for Gor Mahia, the match took an unprecedented turn in the final moments when goalkeeper Bryne Omondi inexplicably gifted the hosts a needless fifth goal.
Calamitous keeper
With the ball firmly at his feet after receiving a back pass, the keeper attempted to dribble past a Pyramids forward Mostafa Zico. His quest ended in a horror show as the striker slid in to score one of the easiest goals of his career.
The blunder elicited widespread criticism and left a bitter taste in the mouths of Gor fans afterwards, marking the catalyst for the post-match debacle that has dominated supporter discussions and prompted Rachier’s recent sentiments.
