CECAFA Kagame Cup: History on the line as Gor Mahia face Rayon Sports in final

A mix of history and personal rivalry will take centre stage this Friday, August 7, 2026, in Kigali, Rwanda, as Kenyan giants Gor Mahia clash with Rwanda’s Rayon Sports in the final of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
Both sides navigated a gruelling tournament to reach the showpiece match, showcasing the high-intensity rivalry that defines East and Central African football.
Road to final
Gor Mahia booked their ticket to the final through a hard-fought 8–7 penalty shootout victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal on Tuesday, August 4, following a 1–1 draw in regulation time. Head coach Charles Akonnor’s side had earlier topped Group A on goal difference, securing convincing wins against APR FC and Garde Républicaine despite a narrow setback against Uganda’s Vipers SC.
Meanwhile, Rayon Sports capitalised on home advantage to punch their ticket to the final, clinching top spot in Group C before comfortably dispatching Jamus SC 3–1 in the semi-finals.
Eyeing a fourth regional crown
For K’Ogalo, the final presents an opportunity to end a 41-year regional title drought. Gor Mahia last won the CECAFA Club Championship in 1985, defeating bitter rivals AFC Leopards 2–0 in the final in Sudan.
That victory marked their third regional crown and capped off the club’s legendary “Golden Generation” of the 1980s, an era that culminated in their historic 1987 African Cup Winners’ Cup (Mandela Cup) triumph.
Gor Mahia now carries the responsibility of bringing the regional trophy back to Kenya.
A Kenyan club has not lifted the CECAFA title since 2008, when Tusker FC defeated Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) 2–1 in Tanzania.
Speaking ahead of the clash, defender Mike Kibwage admitted that facing the Rwandan champions on their home turf in the final will be a challenge they are up for.
“We are motivated despite playing a team that will bank on home advantage. We know it won’t be easy; they have their home fans who will back their team, but we are determined to fight with the 11 on the pitch and make our fans and nation proud,” he said.
The centre back also reflected on K’Ogalo’s journey to the final, asserting that they can draw inspiration from the tough group they were in to
“We have worked so hard to be here; we came up against the best of the best in teams from different countries and emerged from the group of death,” he added.
Rayon Sports chasing second star
Rayon Sports, who won their sole CECAFA title in 1998, will rely heavily on their passionate home crowd.
The Rwandan outfit already holds a recent psychological edge over the Kenyan champions, having defeated Gor Mahia 2–0 in a pre-season friendly during the annual Rayon Day celebrations on July 18, 2026. Armed with home support and recent head-to-head success, Rayon Sports will be no push-overs as they hunt for their second regional star.
