Weatherman warns of heavy downpours during Easter season

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans to brace for a wet Easter holiday, with widespread rains expected across the country and isolated heavy downpours in some areas.
According to the latest forecast, the rains are expected to affect areas including Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands (including Nairobi), the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, and several regions along the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya from Friday, April 18, to Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
“Rainfall is likely to continue over several parts of the country. Isolated heavy rainfall events are expected over some parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, Southeastern Lowlands and North-eastern Kenya,” the weatherman predicted.
Residents in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley region should prepare for morning rains, with afternoon and evening showers, including thunderstorms, expected to intensify across several areas from Friday through Tuesday.
The regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties.

“Morning rains are expected over a few places, giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places. Night showers are expected over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places,” Kenya Met stated.
Counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, will mainly experience sunny intervals with a chance of light rains over a few places in the morning, with nights being partly cloudy.
“Mornings are likely to be cloudy, with light rains over a few places, giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places,” Kenya Met added.
Counties in the south-eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, are predicted to have showers in the afternoon and night from Friday through Tuesday, with mornings expected to be cloudy with light rains over a few areas breaking into sunny intervals.

Temperature
In the advisory, daytime temperatures are forecast to hit a high of 30°C over the five days, particularly in some coastal, northeastern, and western regions.
While nighttime temperatures are predicted to be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and around Mt Kilimanjaro
“Average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in the Coast, northeastern, and northwestern Kenya. Average night-time (minimum) temperatures will be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and around Mt Kilimanjaro,” the weather advisory reads.
