We shall miss you: Uhuru’s final poignant tribute before Raila’s burial

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta delivered a deeply emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga during his state funeral at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Uhuru, speaking before thousands of mourners, reflected on Raila’s lifelong service to Kenya, describing him as a leader whose courage and sacrifice shaped the nation’s democratic path.
His voice wavered as he expressed gratitude to the people of Siaya for sharing Raila with Kenya and the African continent.

“To our brothers and sisters from Bondo and Siaya, thank you for giving us your son. He did not serve Kenya alone, but Africa,” Uhuru said. “My condolences to the ODM family for giving us a leader who united this country.”

Tribute to a patriot
The former president reminisced about their political journey, saying Raila’s legacy would live far beyond his years. He urged Kenyans to remember the former prime minister not through grief alone, but by carrying forward his ideals of justice, equality, and unity.
“We shall miss you as a friend, a brother, and a leader of this nation,” Uhuru stated. “We shall miss your insights, your thoughtfulness, your wisdom, and your laughter.”
He added that Raila’s courage and resilience would continue to inspire generations, calling him one of the few leaders who lived and led selflessly.

“Your deeds will live long, and we will remember and emulate them. Fare thee well, Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga,” Uhuru said.
Farewell message
As the emotional ceremony neared its end, Uhuru offered his final words, a mix of grief, admiration, and prayer
“Fare thee well, my ndugu. Fare thee well, my friend. Mungu akubariki na akulinde,” he concluded, drawing tears and applause from mourners.
Uhuru’s remarks encapsulated the depth of friendship between the two men, who grew to respect and rely on each other in their shared vision for a united Kenya.
Raila Odinga will be laid to rest at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, October 19, 2025, where generations of the Odinga family rest, marking the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most iconic political figures.
