Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has questioned Rigathi Gachagua’s ability to lead the Mt Kenya region.

Through his Facebook handle on Friday, August 22, 2025, Wambugu shared a video clip showing how Gachagua’s safety was compromised at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) during his much-hyped return.

The outspoken politician wondered aloud whether Mt Kenya residents could truly entrust their political and social future to Gachagua, pointing to the disorganisation witnessed at the airport.

According to Wambugu, Gachagua’s chaotic reception was evidence of poor planning and weak leadership instincts.

“Are we safe in his hands?”

In a strongly worded statement, Wambugu directly questioned Gachagua’s fitness to be the political kingpin of the Mt Kenya community.

“ARE WE SAFE IN GACHAGUA’s HANDS? Somehow – a man unable to even plan for his own personal entry back into the country after announcing it to all and sundry – claims that he is the KING of a community of over 12M men, women and children; with over 7M voters; and wants us to trust and depend on him for our national political relevance and survival. How? This one? Maheni,” Wambugu wrote.

The remarks come just hours after Gachagua’s supporters clashed with police at JKIA and in parts of Nairobi, leaving several injured and dozens arrested.

The event, which was intended to symbolise Gachagua’s political resilience, turned into an embarrassing display of disorder, according to his critics.

Rift over Mt Kenya leadership

Wambugu’s statement reflects growing divisions within the Mt Kenya region over who should take over the mantle of leadership and represent the community’s interests in national politics.

While a section of leaders has rallied behind Gachagua as their kingpin, others like Wambugu argue that he lacks the organisational skills and political foresight required for such a role.

The former legislator further hinted that the Mt Kenya region cannot afford to gamble with its political future by backing what he called a “chaotic” leader.

His message has since sparked heated debate online, with both Gachagua’s supporters and opponents exchanging sharp words.

As the dust settles on the controversial homecoming, the question remains whether Rigathi Gachagua can truly consolidate Mt Kenya’s vote bloc or whether dissenting voices like Wambugu’s will weaken his claim to regional dominance.
