Mathira MP declares Kindiki Mt Kenya kingpin, cautions Meru against betrayal

Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi has declared Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the undisputed kingpin of the Mt Kenya region, urging Meru residents to stand firmly behind their leader and warning against turning their backs on one of their own.
Speaking when he joined Kindiki for an empowerment programme in Igembe South on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Wamumbi stressed the importance of unity and cohesion within the region.
He emphasised that the moment had arrived for Meru to rally behind Kindiki with the same steadfast loyalty that the community had shown to past presidents from other parts of Mt Kenya.
“I have come here to Meru to stand with your leaders and to ensure that we are all united as one. I have come here and met Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who is the lion of Mt Kenya, and I want us to unite Kenya with him. Your governor is also a strong leader, and you should support him fully. Kindiki is also exemplary,” Wamumbi said, adding that he had travelled from Mathira to personally reaffirm his support.

Wamumbi recalled the political history of Meru’s unwavering support for three former presidents, the late Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, and Mwai Kibaki, as well as former President Uhuru Kenyatta, pointing out that Meru stood with these leaders despite their roots being in different parts of the Mt Kenya region.
“Let me remind you, people of Meru, that we had our first president, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and you stood firmly by him until he completed his term. You also stood by Moi, you stood by Kibaki, and you stood by Uhuru Kenyatta. Both Kibaki and Uhuru hailed from the opposite side of Mt Kenya. You have supported three presidents from the upper side of Mt Kenya.”
He argued that now it was Meru’s turn to back one of their own in a position of high national leadership, positioning Deputy President Kindiki as the rightful political torchbearer for the region.
He also promised the Mutuma M’ethingia-led county continued support from Mt Kenya West, urging them not to squander their golden opportunity to groom Kindiki for even greater roles.
“Now it is your time to stand with your son, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. I have come all the way from Mathira to make sure that from Mathira to Wamunyoro, we are all behind the lion of Mt Kenya, Kithure Kindiki. If I have come from Mathira to stand with your son, will you truly abandon him? Stand with him so that we can build roads, bring electricity, educate our children, and ensure he serves two terms,” Wamumbi said.
