Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accompanied by his son Jomo, has arrived at Nyayo Stadium for the state funeral of the late Raila Odinga.

A video clip seen by this writer on Friday, October 17, 2025, captured the moment when the former head of state, alongside other dignitaries, received a warm welcome from mourners who had filled the stadium.

Crowds broke into cheers as Uhuru made his way to the pavilion, waving at the thousands who had gathered to pay their final respects to the late ODM Party Leader.

The emotional ceremony has drawn leaders from across the political divide, diplomats, and foreign dignitaries attending to witness Raila’s final send-off.

The state funeral, organised by the National Funeral Committee, will feature a full military guard of honour, a gun salute, and tributes from both local and international leaders, marking the first time in decades that a Kenyan opposition leader is being accorded such honours.

Uhuru recalls friendship with Raila

In his eulogy to the family of Raila Odinga and Kenyans, delivered earlier in the week, Uhuru described Raila’s death as a deeply personal loss.

“My heart is heavy, and my spirit is burdened with a grief that is both profound and deeply personal.

“The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation, a silence where once there was a voice of thunder and conviction.

“I have lost a friend and a brother. I will miss our conversations, sometimes challenging, always insightful, and the fire of belief that never left his eyes,” Uhuru said.

He went on to recall their political journey, from being fierce rivals to close allies following the famous 2018 handshake that brought peace to a deeply divided nation.

“To me, Raila was more than a political colleague; he was a defining part of my own journey in public service and in life. Baba was a man who made you sharpen your own ideas, compelling you to defend your positions with passion.

“However, in recent years, a different bond was forged, one of respect, shared patriotism, and a common desire to see a united Kenya,” Uhuru added.
