Former Kenya Revenue Authority employee and his wife were on Tuesday arraigned in court over failure to pay Ksh38 million in taxes.
The two, Joseph Chege Gikonyo and Lucy Kangai Stephen, were charged alongside their company Giche Limited.
The two were alleged to have evaded paying the taxes on various dates between 2010 and 2015 in Mombasa County for transactions involving their company.
The State claimed that the couple owes KRA Ksh38,692,694 arising from their company’s taxable income and accrued penalties.
They pleaded not guilty to one count of fraud before Nairobi Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.
Their lawyer, Ismael Abbas, termed their prosecution malicious, saying that they have already paid Ksh20 million to the taxman.
The suspects were ordered to pay a cash bail of Ksh5 million or bond of Ksh10 million and deposit their passports in court.
